Our Bonsai of the Month:

This is Liana's special Bonsai, one which she personally feels is worthy of note because it is a promising specimen, excellent value, and shows character.

Code 3547
Pinus thumbergia cultivar

Style - Windswept
Height - 63cm
Width - 32cm
Age - 8 years

Origin - Europe
Species - Pinus thumbergia cultivar (Pine Tree Hybrid)
Pot - 32 x 25 x 10cm, brown, unglazed, Chinese.
Cultivation - Adaptable to most well drained soils.  Frost resistant and drought tender.

I grew this Bonsai 8 years ago from seed and have enjoyed watching it thrive in our climate.  The winter sunshine left shadows behind this photo confusing the style somewhat.  It has a tiny ‘jinn’ or dead, whitened branch in the middle and bright green moss thriving below the lowest branches.

Pinus species are very fast growing trees and for that reason are often used for timber, shade and bird attraction.  They make very hardy Bonsai that can be trained easily and resist diseases which often attack other conifers.

Although very young, this Bonsai is well established and stable.   For this one to thrive it is best grown outdoors in a sunny or partially shady area.  It prefers a regular drink of water and small amounts of organic food such as well composted cow or sheep manure. Don’t be discouraged by the size of the pot.  It makes it a lot easier for you to keep as it will not dry out as easily and does not need to be repotted for 5 or more years.  Bring it to Bonsai Palace for it’s free three monthly feed and groom.

All Bonsai Palace Bonsai are presented with a Bonsai Birth Certificate and detailed care instructions.
