NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Issued at 4:00pm WDT on Wednesday the 7th of January 2009
RECENT EVENTS:
NORTHERN HALF:
Isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms in the Kimberley. Very hot away
from coastal areas.
SOUTHERN HALF:
Fine. Cloudy areas near south coast.
SYNOPTIC SITUATION AND FORECAST EXPLANATION:
Other than isolated thunderstorms in the Kimberley, Pilbara and inland Gascoyne
fine weather is expected this evening.
On Thursday a high pressure ridge will lie south of the state with a heat trough
near or just inland from the west coast. Fine weather is expected throughout the
SW Land Division, with hot to very hot conditions away from the south coast
areas. Also expect fine weather in the Eucla and Goldfields.
Seasonal thunderstorms in the Kimberley should be mainly in the north. There may
also be isolated high based afternoon thunderstorms in the inland Gascoyne
though expect only light rainfall from these storms.
FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS:
Fairly similar conditions are expected on Friday and Saturday, with the heat
trough off the west coast in the morning then pushing just inland during the
afternoon as sea breezes set in. Hot to very hot weather again appears likely in
SW areas away from the south coast. Further isolated thunderstorms appear likely
in the Kimberley tending scattered in the far north.
On Sunday the deep heat trough should be again off the west coast in the
morning. Expect hot to very hot weather in all SW districts. The trough will
move inland in the afternoon and to eastern parts of the SW Land Division in the
evening. A weak cold front may cause isolated light showers along the western
south coast later in the evening as cooler conditions develop in west coastal
parts.
Expect a cool change in western and southern SW districts on Monday.
